This 225 bedroom development occupies the site of the former Police HQ on Market Street East, close to the Central Conservation Area in Newcastle. There are a number of listed buildings located in the immediate area including Carliol House opposite and St Andrew’s Catholic Church to the South.

The site fronts onto Market Street and the two storey level change to Erik Street is navigated via external staircases as part of the landscaping proposals, which include a centrally located courtyard. The ground floor amenity spaces look onto Market Street and provide an active frontage, with the accommodation above and to the flanks forming a U-shape on the site. The set-backs to the upper levels are to assist in responding to the height and form of the immediate context.

The primary elevations are constructed using a framework of stone vertical fins with increased window reveals, soffits and cills providing depth to the facades. The infill panels to these elevations are a combination of cladding panels and windows. Splayed windows or cladding panels are selectively utilised across the elevations to maximise both natural daylight and sunlight with consideration for the orientation.

This scheme was completed in September 2018.
