Royal Hospital for Sick Children
Sitting on the south edge of the meadows on the fringes of Edinburgh’s city centre. The site compromises a series of historic buildings including the grade B listed main hospital by celebrated architect George Washington Browne. It is proposed to refurbish and develop the site to deliver a mixed-use scheme comprising 95 private residential properties within the existing buildings, a new block of 31 affordable housing units, and new student accommodation comprising of 323 beds. Provision for alternative uses (commercial and/or community uses) has also been included within the scheme, with a view to delivering a project which respects and enhances the character of this iconic location.
The fundamental strategy seeks to preserve and enhance the existing building and associated setting and compliment these with high-quality areas of public realm and sympathetic new development.
The project is undertaken by Downing, one of the UK’s leading developers and student accommodation providers. Downing continues to innovate and hone its offering, emphasising its commitment to delivering superior, sustainable student accommodation underpinned by award-winning design.
