SECTOR: All, Student Accommodation

STATUS: Complete

Designed on behalf of developer Watkin Jones Group, this scheme delivers 504 student flats on the site of the former Scotstoun Flour Mill, overlooking the River Kelvin and on the periphery of the main university campus. The scheme comprises of five separate blocks arranged around a new public space that opens up pedestrian links to Dumbarton Road and Integrates with the Kelvin Walk master plan, which ultimately aims to provide a pedestrian link between the Transport Museum and Kelvingrove. This integrated development injects a living, breathing environment into a post industrialised pocket of the city and has been delivered to achieve a BREEAM Very Good Standard.

Six, seven and eight storeys block step down the site and are orientated to maximise daylighting whilst acknowledging the surrounding context and the site topography. The height of the uppermost blocks tie in closely with the ridge height of the existing mill building while lower blocks step down with the site topography, referencing the adjacent buildings towards the riverside. Top floors have been set back and the elevations are varied to create a light mix of glass and zinc fenestration at roof level while an existing, period water tower has been be rebuilt to accommodate a stairwell for one of the new blocks.
