The project consists of the conversion of two retail floors of an existing building to form 76 new bedrooms for the end user, the University of Edinburgh.
The existing high retail floor heights were utilised to create studios with mezzanine levels for students and a variety of individually styled rooms with separate communal kitchen/dining rooms and a large split level communal lounge. The first floor will be commercially let as hotel-style studios including three one bed flats and the second floor is being run as traditional style halls of residence.
One of the challenges of this project was to ensure adequate daylighting to rooms and this was achieved by removing sections of existing floor slab over two floors to create new open courtyard levels at the first floor.
